Witch visits

The picture you’ve just seen is from ‘A Rehearsall both Straung and True, of Hainous and Horrible Actes Committed by Elizabeth Stile’ published in 1579 and features a witch feeding her toad familiars with blood.

Of course so many of the women accused in such sensationalist woodcuts and pamphlets … and sometimes executed as witches … were simply the ‘othered’.

I am currently visiting English sites of witch executions. It is a year long project, taking place on new moons, with artist Geraldine Hudson. We are half-way through this series of pilgrimages and in 2024 will be releasing objects, performance and printed matter based on the visitings.
